Prior to starting Maui Christian Counseling, Dr. Chen had a successful private practice in Beverly Hills, California for 12 years, and was also part of a group practice in Lahaina. In addition, he was a staff member of Asian American Christian Counseling Services in Los Angeles, and the Pepperdine University Counseling Center.

Dr. Chen spent most of his childhood on the tropical island of Taiwan then moved to the mainland as an adolescent. As a result, he is familiar with the bicultural challenges that come with the Asian Pacific Islander experience. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese.

He is dedicated to working with adults, couples and groups in guiding them towards better mental and emotional health. He recognizes that mental healthiness can be negatively impacted by either situational or long-term problems and will tailor his treatments to match. Dr. Chen is adept at helping people understand how emotional and spiritual beliefs shape what they do and how they live their lives. Through understanding, we can learn to make healthier decisions and develop resilience when the inevitable problems in life occur.

Dr. Chen is particularly skilled at counseling men—a group that often gets neglected in counseling. Dr. Chen challenges men to grow to be better individuals, leaders, husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons by doing the hard things necessary for maturity.

In his spare time, Dr. Chen enjoys spending time with his wife Heidi, hanging out with the Ohana, surfing, paddling, cycling, gardening, and crossfit.
